Ice Cap Beanie- FREE Crochet Pattern

Hello my friends! My sincere apologies for not posting recently. My personal life has gotten in the way of my crochet life for a little bit, but I’m back now! To make up for the lack of posts, I thought I’d treat you to a FREE pattern, how does that sound?

It has been BRUTALLY cold where I live. Like, it was -15* last night cold. Out of pure curiosity, I looked up the temp in Anchorage last night. It was 16*. That’s like 31 degrees warmer in Alaska than here in the middle of the US. I honestly don’t know if it has ever been colder here, but I sure don’t recall it ever being so cold. From what I gather, its pretty dang cold all over the country right now, so how about a nice warm hat pattern you can work up in a couple of hours?

I designed the Ice Cap Beanie last year as part of the Crochet Cancer Challenge, and created this hat in honor of my mother. She battled cancer for a little over a decade, and lost all of her hair from chemotherapy three separate times. In addition to a massive collection of wigs, she also had many many hats. (Actually, she had a huge collection of hats even before cancer, but she, unlike me, looked super cute in hats!)

The Ice Cap Beanie uses my signature stitch, which I have dubbed the Dolphin Stitch because to me it looks like dolphins jumping out of the water. The Dolphin Stitch is super versatile and fun to work up. It also creates an amazing texture and can be used with any size yarn and hook. Ice Cap Beanie crochet pattern

And now, without further fluff and hullabaloo, here is the Ice Cap Beanie pattern:

Materials:

*worsted weight (4) yarn in 2 colors

*5.5mm crochet hook

*pompom

*stitch markers

*finishing needle

*scissors

Gauge:

3dst x 4 rows = 2″ square

Abbreviations:

ch-chain

slst- slip stitch

sc- single crochet

dc- double crochet

dst- dolphin stitch

fpdc- front post double crochet

bpdc- back post double crochet

Notes:

*This pattern is written in US terminology.

*The body is worked in rows, and the brim is worked in rounds.

*If you wish to adjust the circumference, you may add or subract repeats of R2 in multiples of 2.

*To adjust the length, you can add or subtract repeats of R2.

How to do the Dolphin Stitch (dst):

Step 1. yo 2x, insert hook in first ch (or in ch- space if indicated), yo, pull up a loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] twice. (2 loops on hook)

Step 2. yo, insert hook in next st (or in same ch- space if indicated), yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops. (3 loops on hook)

Step 3. yo, insert hook in next st (or in same ch- space if indicated) yo, pull up a loop. (5 loops on hook)

Step 4. insert hook in next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through all 6 loops, ch1 to complete stitch. This is your “anchor stitch”

Pattern Instructions:

Body (worked in rows):

R1. Using Color A, ch 47, begin dst in 3rd ch from hook, dst across, dc in last ch, turn. (11dst and 1 dc)

R2-R50. ch2, dst across in each ch sp, anchoring your final loop in the top of next st, dc in top of ch2, turn. (11 dst and 1 dc)

Fold in half so that your last row meets up with your foundation row. slst together, skipping every other ch on your foundation row. Finish off, leaving an 18″ tail.

Do not weave in ends yet.

Brim (worked in rounds):

Rnd 1. Using Color B, on opposite end from tail, attach yarn one st to the right of the seam. With the wrong side facing out, place 2sc in each dst row around. slst to first st. (100)

Rnd 2- Rnd 6. ch2, *fpdc, bpdc*, repeat from *to* around, slst to first fpdc (100)

Finishing Instructions:

Using your finishing needle and keeping your hat with the wrong side out, weave your tail in and out of the ch2 spaces around top. Cinch to close, attach pompom on the outside and securely weave in all ends. Turn hat right side out, and stay warm out there!
