Pattern Release: the Grand Gentleman Hat

Hello my friends!

After over a month of zero pattern releases, can you believe I have two pattern releases in the same week?! Crazy, but that’s what I get for agreeing to participate in events with my friends and not actually writing things on a calendar 🙂

(ad disclosure: I’m a blogger. We have ads. If you click one, I might get some small compensation. Standard issue, but you can read all about it in my boring privacy policy if you really want to.)  Today is a very special day because it is my father’s birthday and to celebrate, I designed him a hat!

If you were not aware, my father has been in Heaven for over 15 years. He got an early ticket to meet Jesus with the assistance of Glioblastoma, which is a form of brain cancer.

My dad was an amazing human. He was funny, generous and wise and taught me everything I know about getting along with people, managing finances, loving the Lord, and knowing when to keep my mouth shut, just to name a few. He was a perfect example of what a husband should be, and had an amazing way of charming even the grouchiest person and making them laugh. I miss him, and my mother who also passed away from a different cancer, terribly and still dream of them both at least once a week.

Yes, I’m crying a little bit. Sorry about that. Got a little too sappy there for a second!

Anyway, I designed my hat for this year’s Crochet Cancer Challenge in honor of my daddy. I love that the challenge is held during his birthday month, and I was able to sweet talk a friend who had already called “dibs” on today to trade me days so I could share my dad’s hat with you on his birthday!

I have named it the Grand Gentleman Hat, because my father truly was one. My spouse is a bit more camera shy than I would prefer, and although he said he would model my hat for me, he still has not done so, and time was a-waisting, so I had to pop it on for a couple of selfies. Historically, I look stupid in every hat I have ever put on my head. So imagine my surprise when I discovered that the Grand Gentleman Hat looks cute on not only ladies, but ME!

The official color for brain cancer is grey (I assume because they refer to brains as ‘grey matter’), so I used Brava Worsted, courtesy of WeCrochet to design my hat. I also added a little bit of a darker grey for the last round, but that is of course just personal preference.

If you choose to order some Brava Worsted yarn for your Grand Gentleman Hat, please consider using my affiliate link to make your purchase. It won’t cost you anything extra, but I might get a few cents in commission!
