Pattern Release: the Throwback Throw Blanket

Greetings, my friend!

Straight Hooked Throwback Throw Blanket Pattern Release

I am so thrilled to finally be able to share my newest pattern with you. I first sat down and began this design in March and have been teasing you with it for actual months!

I had a bunch of Brava Worsted yarn from WeCrochet left over from my Sweet Treats Blanket and the colors jumped out at me, demanding to be made into a retro blanket design.

My husband loves to watch Three’s Company reruns, and has been asking me to make him a blanket to match Jack, Janet and Terri’s (or Chrissy’s, depending on what season) apartment. I knew he was going to be overjoyed that I finally (after 15 years of his asking) was making his blanket!

So I gathered up every skein that would fit the bill and started designing the flower hexagons.

It didn’t take me too long to realize that I was going to run out of green yarn long before I ran out of yellows and browns, so I decided that the amount of green yarn would dictate how many flowers there were, and then I would fill in the gaps (and make the blanket warmer) with solid hexagons.

I cannot even tell you how many hours I spent working on this design, but I can tell you everything I binge watched while doing so:

Grey’s Anatomy Seasons 1-17

The full series of Ozark

Station 19 Season 5

The Good Doctor Season 4

This is Us Season 5

Almost all of Schitt’s Creek -I’m on the last season and will probably finish watching it while I work on the new design on my hook

This is not at all meant to discourage you from making a Throwback Throw Blanket of your own. My projects always take me longer than they will take you because of the pattern writing process. Things don’t always come out they way I envision them, and there is often a lot of frogging involved.

For example, (and I am wishing I would have taken a picture because it looked hilarious in retrospect even though I was furious with myself at the time), I joined 99% of my hexagons before I spread it out to admire my work. At some point I had joined one piece to another on 2 sides, which meant I had a weird pucker going on. And to top it off, I hadn’t counted how many pieces were going in a row, so I had one extremely long side and a super stumpy short side. I spent an actual entire 3 day weekend frogging my joins, balling up all that yarn and restructuring my layout to join again.

Check out my new tutorial on joining your pieces:

The good news for you is that I included brilliant suggestions for planning out your layout before joining in the pattern, based on my wasted weekend!

I know this color scheme is not for everyone- my design sample most definitely looks like the late 70s/ early 80s puked on my couch. (But somehow I love it- my spouse never fails to give me great suggestions for designs!)

You can choose any colors you would like to make your own Throwback Throw Blanket. You’ll want to make sure you have enough of one color to join all of your pieces with the Double Crochet Join method.  I even made a video tutorial of this joining method, which you can use for any type of project that requires joining multiple pieces!

If you want to make your blanket just like mine, you can snag your  yarn from KnitPicks using my affiliate link. (It won’t cost you any extra, but I might get a couple dollars in commission)

  • I used Brava Worsted from KnitPicks as follows:
    • 5 skeins Custard
    • 4 skeins Sienna
    • 2 skeins Just Peachy Speckle
    • 2 skeins Caution
