Granny Block Square- FREE Crochet Pattern

Hello friends!

As it often happens, there have been many months with no pattern releases and suddenly there are two in the same month. This year the delay between pattern releases is greater than years past, but life happens. Maybe one day the frequency will increase, maybe it won’t. Time will tell, and I hope you’ll stay on this journey with me.

I designed the Granny Block Square pattern as part of the 2025 Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket Crochet-a-Long hosted by Madame Stitch. This is my 3rd year participating in this annual event, and each year that I have shown my square design to my husband, he has asked for me to make a full blanket from that square. Last year he was extra excited about my square design, but I had other projects in line and didn’t make the blanket he had asked for. This year, however, I did make multiple Granny Block Squares and am currently working on the border of my blanket.

The Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket CAL will be live from September 29 through October 29 and a new square pattern will be released on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the month. Each pattern, and the joining and bordering technique will be available for free to view on each contributing designer’s blog.

This year’s square release is bittersweet. This is the last design I finished during my husband’s life. When he and I first met, I didn’t know that one could crochet items other than blankets. I spent our evenings together crocheting blanket after blanket, and he loved all of them. He would request a blanket in specific colors and I would make one. At that time I crocheted quickly and could make a king sized blanket in about 3 weeks.

Over the years my blanket production speed slowed down as life began slapping me in the face with “new and exciting” stressors. And then I fell down the rabbit hole known as Pinterest and discovered that one could make many more things with yarn and a hook than just blankets. I experimented with other items and eventually started a business as a pattern designer nearly 7 years ago. Because blankets take me so long, I prefer to design smaller projects so I am able to provide patterns to you more frequently.

I haven’t made a new blanket for my husband since the release of the Throwback Throw Blanket which I made in 2022. Prior to that, the last blanket I made for him was a waffle stitch blanket- the last blanket I made without writing a pattern for it as well. I finished it just as I was launching my website for what I originally thought was going to be a product sales business. You can see our departed Biscuit trying to reclaim his water bowl that I repurposed and Lucy claiming the waffle blanket while it was in progress.

My husband passed away unexpectedly before I was able to finish this blanket for him. The squares were all stacked on my blocking board waiting for me to join them, but I had intended to wait a bit because Bear requested a different blanket and I figured I could finish this one for him as a Valentine’s surprise next year since the colors were in shades of pink and blue. He requested a blanket resembling Frank and Marie Barone’s on Everybody Loves Raymond and I had just begun staring that blanket about a week before he left me to live with Jesus. I was hating my concept for it and about to frog it all and start over, but now I can’t touch it at all.

So I decided to finish this blanket instead. Its funny, I wasn’t going to share this picture because it was just one I took quickly to ask my daughter if I liked my own layout (something I normally would ask her or Bear because I get too close to my own projects and need someone else’s opinion.) I wasn’t going to share it because there’s another blanket in the background. How ironic that it is that blanket!

Thanks for bearing with me on this post. I’m trying to work through my grief by keeping his memory alive. (Oh, and you may want to expect more blubbering in posts to come, just a warning!) The border on this blanket is taking longer than I had anticipated due to one Ruby Sue Shih Poo who really likes it and keeps laying on it just as I’m about to sit and crochet. I ended up just starting a new shawl design that I can work on when she is holding my blanket hostage, but the other nightI was able to get one quarter of a round done. Eventually I will update this post with a picture of my completed blanket.

Today though, I am going to share the Granny Block Square pattern as a Forever Free pattern!

What’s a Forever Free pattern?

Forever Free patterns are full-length crochet patterns that are available to view here on the Straight Hooked blog. I am able to provide these patterns at no cost to you by allowing ads to appear on your screen. I generate a very small amount of revenue for each ad (I’m talking fractions of a cent), but the more my guests see, stay and navigate around my site, the more those few cents per visitor add up. Of course I would make a much better wage if folks purchased the PDF, but I would rather share this design with you for very little money than for you not to have the opportunity to try this pattern.
