Wow, can you believe August is finally here? I don’t know about you, but here at Straight Hooked Headquarters, July 2025 was the longest month of all time. My heat intolerance seems to get worse by the day, and even though I took a full week off work during the month, July just dragged on and on.

It wasn’t all bad though- Ruby Sue won the Pet of the Month drawing at our complex and received a whole basket of goodies. She took that Pet of the Month thing seriously and brought me one of her special toys (which she somehow also did not destroy) about every hour all month long!

One day in July I was in my local Walmart and I saw a woman wearing a hairnet over her bun. It was not a fancy designer hairnet; just one of those disposable lunch lady hairnets draped over her bun. Didn’t look good at all, but it inspired me! What if I crocheted a hairnet to go over a bun? I rushed to the yarn section in the back of the store and grabbed a spool of size 18 nylon crochet thread, then headed home to start designing.

I found out very quickly that nylon is far too slippery to work with (if you didn’t know that, I’ve just saved you 2 trips to the store from buying and returning!) and returned it the very next day, opting instead for the size 10 cotton.

Trouble was, I had already come up with my concept and I didn’t want to go down to a teeny hook as it would distort the design. Plus, my fingers don’t love to cooperate with the tiny crochet hooks. I decided to keep the hook size the same and instead triple strand my thread, and once I finished my first design sample I just couldn’t stop making them! Check out the difference between a plain bun and a Bohemian Bun Holder bedazzled bun:

I designed this pattern as part of the Crochet Designer Community Global Crochet Collaboration event running throughout 2025. Each Sunday this year, one of the participating designers will share a new Forever Free crochet pattern!

What’s a Forever Free pattern?

Forever Free patterns are full-length crochet patterns that are available to view here on the Straight Hooked blog. I am able to provide these patterns at no cost to you by allowing ads to appear on your screen. I generate a very small amount of revenue for each ad (I’m talking fractions of a cent), but the more my guests see, stay and navigate around my site, the more those few cents per visitor add up. Of course I would make a much better wage if folks purchased the PDF, but I would rather share this design with you for very little money than for you not to have the opportunity to try this pattern.

If you’re ready to jazz up your hairstyle with this sleek bun holder, grab your favorite color(s) of size 10 crochet thread, your 4mm hook and a hair tie, and let’s get started!
